How are flu antivirals used?

When a person is given Tamiflu, Relenza, or other antiviral because they have the signs and symptoms of the flu or have been diagnosed with the flu, this is called treatment. Flu antivirals have been shown to lessen the amount of time people are sick with the flu.

When an antiviral is given to someone who does not have flu symptoms, it is given as prevention to help stop the patient from getting the flu because they have been exposed to or come into close contact with someone (for example live with or take care of someone) who has the flu.
